Il volume presenta la traduzione del "Corpus Hermeticum", un insieme di diciassette trattati in lingua greca, e dell'"Asclepius", pervenutoci in latino, di cui possediamo brevi frammenti in greco trasmessi nelle opere di Lattanzio. Malgrado alcuni trattati siano già conosciuti in epoca medievale, Marsilio Ficino è il primo traduttore del "Corpus". Nei testi ermetici vi è la rivelazione di "secreta", fatta da Dio ad Ermete o dal Trismegisto agli eletti. I "secreta" riguardano la creazione del mondo, la cosmogonia, l'escatologia, le qualità divine, la gnosi e il primato dell'uomo sugli altri esseri, perché capace di compiere il percorso di ascesi, ovvero di ritorno verso Dio.

The volume presents a translation of the "Corpus Hermeticum", a collection of seventeen treatises in Greek, and "Asclepius", in Latin, of which we have short fragments in Greek transmitted by Lactantius books. Although some treatises are already known in the Middle Ages, Marsilio Ficino was the first translator of the "Corpus". In the Hermetic texts we can find the revelation of "secreta" made by God to Hermes, or by Trismegisto to the elects. The "secreta" concern the creation of the world, the cosmogony, the eschatology, the divine qualities, the gnosis and the primacy of man over other beings, because he is able to accomplish the ascetic itinerary, namely, to return to God.

La sua fama raggiunge l'apice in epoca medievale e rinascimentale, tanto che molti manoscritti dei secoli XII e XIII recano un'attribuzione esplicita ad Ermete, pur essendo stati scritti da altri autori.

Hermes Trismegistus is a legendary figure of the Hellenistic period. Many treatises about cosmology, botany, astrology, magic, natural and moral philosophy, are attributed to him, and they are collected in the so-called "Corpus Hermeticum". His fame reaches its peak in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when many twelfth and thirteenth centuries manuscripts are attribuited explicitly to Hermes, although they were written by other authors.
