In questo volume, Etienne Gilson sottolinea l'importante contributo della filosofia cristiana nel pensiero medievale. L'autore francese mostra la necessità di distinguere l'ambito della fede da quello della ragione, con un metodo chiaro e rigoroso. Il Cristianesimo ha sicuramente cambiato il corso della storia della filosofia, pur non essendo l'unico elemento a dominarla. La filosofia medievale è caratterizzata dagli studi sulla natura dell'uomo e del mondo, sugli astri, sulla magia, l'alchimia. Ma non si può negare che nel Medioevo i temi metafisici e morali legati alla "fides" siano al centro del dibattito filosofico. Ciò è confermato innanzitutto dalla nascita della teologia come scienza, poi dai testi di grandi maestri come Tommaso d'Aquino.

In this volume, Etienne Gilson emphasizes the important contribution of Christian philosophy in medieval thought. The French author shows the need to distinguish the sphere of faith from that of reason, with a clear and rigorous method. Christianity has certainly changed the course of history of philosophy, although this is not the only feature of his work. Medieval philosophy is characterized by studies on the nature of man and the world, on astrology, magic, and alchemy. But it can not deny that in the Middle Ages the metaphysical and moral issues related to the "fides" are at the center of the philosophical debate. This is confirmed firstly by the origin of theology as a science, and then by the writings of great masters such as Thomas Aquinas.

È stato direttore dell'Ecole pratique des Hautes Etudes Religieuses e ha insegnato all'Institute of Medieval Studies di Toronto. È stato fondatore e direttore con Marie Thérèse d’Alverny e Marie Dominique Chenu dell'"Archives d’histoire doctrinale et littéraire du Moyen Age". A Dante Alighieri ha dedicato numerosi studi, come "Poésie et théologie dans la Divine Comédie", "Dante et la philosophie", "Dante et Béatrice: études dantesques". He devoted several studies to Dante Alighieri, such as "Poésie et théologie dans la Divine Comédie", "Dante et la philosophie", "Dante et Béatrice: études dantesques".
