The essay is divided into eight chapters, concerning the changes in urban centers occurring from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, and their influence on European civilization. Pirenne contends that the city was born from the union of "portus" (commercial centre) with the "castrum" (place of defense), which occurs in the medieval period. According to Pirenne, the village has evolved from changes related to economy, law, society, and political and religious powers. The development of trade in the Mediterranean, its decadence and the new merchant class are some of the important issues proposed. Henri Pirenne (Verviers 1862 - Uccle 1935) è stato uno storico, professore presso l'Università di Gand e membro di importanti istituzioni accademiche. Scrisse "Souvenirs de Captivité en Allemagne" dopo essere stato arrestato e tenuto come prigioniero dei tedeschi dal 1916 al 1918. Tra le sue opere principali si ricordano "Mahomet et Charlemagne", "Histoire de l'Europe des invasions au XVIe siècle", "Histoire de Belgique".

He wrote "Souvenirs de Captivité en Allemagne" after being arrested and held as a prisoner of the Germans from 1916 to 1918. Among his publications, "Mahomet et Charlemagne", "Histoire de l'Europe des invasions au XVIe siècle", "Histoire de Belgique".
