He attended Parisian literary circles and had a stormy relationship with the poet Arthur Rimabaud, with whom he undertook a trip to Belgium and was arrested on charges of sodomy. He wrote poems and prose texts, among which "Poèmes saturniens", "Romances sans paroles", "Fêtes galantes", "La bonne chanson", "Jadis et naguère", "Liturgies intimes", "Confessions", "Les poètes maudits".
