La vita divina è un breve trattato in cui viene esposta la dottrina dell'unione mistica dell'anima umana con Dio. Per giungere a questa unione senza differenza e senza distinzione occorrono tre tappe (operativa o attiva, affettiva o interiore, contemplativa), connesse alle tre unità della natura dell'uomo (sensibile, spirituale, essenziale). Trinità e unità sono, per Ruusbroec, momenti dialettici che determinano il normale svolgimento dell'esistenza degli individui, opera dell'infinita bontà divina.

"La vita divina" (The Divine life) is a short treatise in which the author exposes the doctrine of the mystical union of the human soul with God. To get to this union without distinction and without difference, three steps (operative or active, affective or interior, contemplative) are required, connecting the three units of the nature of man (physical, spiritual, essential). According to Ruusbroec, Trinity and unit are dialectical moments that determine the normal course of the life of individuals, as a consequence of the infinite goodness of God.

Giovanni Ruusbroec, Italian name of Jan van Ruusbroec (Ruysbroeck 1293 - Groenendael 1381), was a presbyter for approximately twenty years and then prior of the Augustinian abbey of Groenendael. His treatises, written in Flemish, are The adornment of the spiritual marriage, The mirror of eternal salvation and The book of the twelve Beguines.
