Nel seguente volume diviso in tre sezioni, Bertrand mostra come il sentimento di "devotio" alla Persona di Cristo sia una peculiarità non soltanto del periodo medievale, ma anche dell'epoca di Origene.
La tensione dell'anima verso il Salvatore e verso la salvezza scaturisce dalla progressiva scoperta dell'umanità di Cristo e del suo mistero, perciò la devozione è l'elemento fondamentale dell'ascesi.
L'autore espone in maniera dettagliata l'interpretazione di Origene relativa al simbolismo delle parole e delle azioni di Gesù, presenti nei "Commenti ai Vangeli", e il senso di tale simbolizzazione.
